Our Story

Bistro Don Giovanni was opened in March of 1993 by Giovanni and Donna Scala. We have enjoyed humbling success and acclaim throughout the years, and are proud to have become a  landmark Napa Valley restaurant that has stood the test of time.

The name of our restaurant incorporates Donna and Giovanni's names while also making playful references to Milan's famed opera house, La Scala, and one of Mozart's well-known operas, Don Giovanni. This interplay suggests something that is at once deeply personal and also meant to be shared, a contrast that speaks to a foundational tenet for the Bistro. 

Our restaurant holds family and community as one of our cornerstones and part of our mission. It is this dedication to relationships, and a commitment to creating memorable experiences that has kept our regulars returning year after year, many marking important milestones with us. We’ve watched children grow up and bring in families of their own, spreading joy and making new traditions along the way. È simplicemente magico!

While Donna passed away in 2014, we honor her in everything we do by emulating her warm and joyous personality and remembering her as a talented chef and creative force behind our restaurant. When visiting next, please take in the art installation dedicated to Donna’s memory located in our outdoor seating area. 

For over thirty years at Bistro Don Giovanni we have been honing our craft. From the handcrafted semolina and egg pastas, to the warm breads made from scratch each morning, we have created a culinary rhythm that lends itself to consistency and distinction. You will always find guest favorites like Mamma Concetta’s meatballs, hand-filled ravioli with lemon cream sauce, salmon with mashed potatoes and beurre blanc, or our crispy yet succulent Chicken Diavolo on the menu. These classic, beloved dishes coupled with our seasonal specials exemplify our blending of traditional Italian recipes and the amazing local bounty found here in Napa Valley.

Our CRAFT

Chef Partner Scott Warner has spent over fifteen years collectively leading the Bistro Don Giovanni team. Chef’s dedication to local fare and his relationships with our community farmers really embody the spirit of the Napa Valley. His philosophy includes creating a memorable culinary experience for each and every guest, and his starting point is often right here at home on our beautiful Bistro grounds. From the many varieties of fruit trees to the herb and vegetable beds that make up Scott’s Garden, Chef is able to let the land guide the menu. The work of combining our local bounty with our craft lends to a purpose driven and meaningful work space where everyone feels useful and a part of the process.
